P2P Evolution: From File-sharing to Decentralized Workflows

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing is currently receiving a great deal of attention. Much of the current attention is focused on the use of P2P computing for exchanging media files. But P2P systems have actually been around for a long time and many application scenarios exist. In this paper we discuss on one hand the evolution of P2P middleware from simple file-sharing to decentralized data storage; on the other hand the impact on the future development of decentralized workflows. Building up a P2P based data storage, with similar properties as a standard data store, opens many research issues. While P2P databases enable distributed data storage, distributed control flows are considered in decentralized workflows. The paper will present several research issues addressing the collaboration and coordination problem in distributed environments without a centralized coordination instance by means of a B2B application scenario.

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing systems have gained large interests among the internet users. However, wide-scale applications of P2P file-sharing technologies are constrained by the limitations associated with the sophisticated control mechanisms. Moreover, the decentralized and anonymous characteristics of P2P environments make it more difficult to control accesses on the shared resources, es...
Fighting Freeloaders in Decentralized P2P File Sharing Systems
Currently used P2P file-sharing systems such as Gnutella suffer from a freeloading problem due to absence of enforcible decentralized mechanism to motivate peers to provide services to others. Freeloading leads to a de facto centralized system that is susceptible to DoS attacks and provides poor service to its participants. In this paper, we propose a decentralized mechanism that avoids on-line...

P2P architecture is the next-generation network paradigm to replace the traditional client-server architecture. Typical P2P systems are characterized by the decentralized control, scalability and robustness. Centrally managed storage services, such as Dropbox, are popular for synchronizing data between several devices. P2P-based approaches that run fully decentralized, such as BitTorrentSync, a...
An Architecture Concept for Mobile P2P File Sharing Services
In this paper we present a P2P file-sharing architecture optimized for mobile networks. We discuss the applicability of current P2P resource access and mediation techniques in the context of 2.5G/3G mobile networks. We investigate a mobile P2P architecture that is able to reconcile the decentralized operation of P2P file sharing with the interests of network operators, e. g. traffic control. Th...
